Greenpoint

Since March of 2020 - just as the pandemic lockdown began - I have been documenting people of the Polish diaspora living in Greenpoint, Brooklyn using a large format camera and black and white film.

Greenpoint became home to many Polish emigrants following the Gdansk shipyard uprising in the late 1970’s and further Soviet-era political unrest in the early 1980’s. Seeking economic opportunities and social stability, a strong Polish enclave blossomed in this northernmost section of Brooklyn. By the mid 2010’s, gentrification and construction of luxury apartments began to force out many Polish-American residents, yet the culture, language, and traditions of their Polish heritage remain central to the fabric of the neighborhood.

With the assistance of two Polish photographers and artists, I created portraits with the goal of recording residents as the cultural and physical landscape of their neighborhood changes.
