Cultural Heritage - Introduction

Taken over a six-week period in the fall of 2016, the following photographs - contained in Nickelsberg's Afghanistan’s Heritage: Restored Spirit and Stone - depict cultural preservation projects that the U.S. Embassy in Kabul has supported.

Influenced by its physical geography of mountains, rivers, and plains, as well as its unique placement in Central Asia, Afghanistan's heritage is emblematic of the country’s role as a crossroads, traversed for millennia by empires and nomads from across Asia.
